Asot on regional team to Addis Ababa, Tripoli
St John’s, January 29, 2010 - Antigua Labour Party MP Asot Michael is among number of regional government officials who will be seeking to deepen ties with Ethiopia and Libya next week.
Mr. Michael has been invited to attend the 14th Summit of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to be followed by meetings with Libyan government officials from January 31st to February 2nd 2010.
He will serve as an advisor on the St Kitts and Nevis delegation to the Addis Ababa Summit and the Tripoli talks. The twin island federation’s delegation is headed by Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas who was elected for an unprecedented fourth straight term earlier this week.
The Leaders and Presidents of the African Continent are expected to discuss a range of important issues in the advancement of the African Union towards securing progress and prosperity for the African people
In the continuing effort by the African leaders to strengthen solidarity and cooperation between the African continent and the Caribbean region, the Heads of Government of CARICOM have been invited to the AU Summit 2010.
A number of CARICOM leaders attended last year’s Summit in recognition of the keen Caribbean interest in Africa; the sense of Caribbean pride in its African heritage and the blood links that Caribbean people have with the people of Africa .
The African Union’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti is expected to be a priority agenda item for the three day meeting in the Ethiopian capital.
In Tripoli, Caribbean leaders plan to follow up on a number of bi-lateral discussions concerned with boosting Libya’s diplomatic presence in the OECS integration grouping.
The leaders are expected to finalize plans for a Libyan embassy in St Lucia and a Libyan investment bank in St Kitts and Nevis.
